LABOUR CHAIRS OF ASSOCIATION OF DISTRICT COUNCILS, ASSOCIATION OF COUNTY COUNCILS;AND ASSOCIATION OF METROPOLITAN AUTHORITIES

That this House welcomes the election of Councillor Margaret Singh of Reading District Councils on 21st July as the new Chair of the Association of District Councils; recalls that on 21st June Councillor Dennis Pettitt of Nottinghamshire County Council was elected Chair of the Association of County Councils and that Councillor Jeremy Beecham of Newcastle City Council was re-elected as Chair of the Association of Metropolitan Authorities on 17th June; notes that for the first time in local government history, all three major local authority associations are now headed by councillors from the Labour Party; endorses the view of the honourable Member for Blackburn that 'The Conservatives are now an endangered species in the local government'; considers that Labour in local government best represents the concerns and needs of local people; and wishes the three chairs well in their terms of office.
