Early day motion tabled by primary sponsor David Clelland (Labour), on Thursday, 2 December 1993, in the House of Commons. It is signed by 42 members in total.
REPORT ON RECALLED CERVICAL SMEAR TESTS
That this House expresses grave concern at the findings of the Report of the Northern Regional Health Authority on the recall of patients for cervical smear tests in Gateshead; and calls upon the Secretary of State for Health to investigate the inadequacies revealed relating to the recording of FHSA practice visits, the reliance on the oral assurances of the general practitioner concerned that he had a consultant's support for his questionable methods, the alleged misinterpretation of the consultant's letter appearing to support the methods used, the statement that different methods for performing smear tests were appropriate for different socio-economic groups of women and, if the patients concerned were advised that the general practitioner adopted unusual methods, what alternative methods were available and what the reliability of each alternative was.
