Early day motion tabled by primary sponsor Piara S Khabra (Labour), on Tuesday, 4 July 1995, in the House of Commons. It is signed by 42 members in total.

EALING COUNCIL FINANCES

That this House regrets the perpetual capacity of Conservative honourable Members deliberately to misunderstand local government finance; considers the decision of Ealing's Labour Council to repay its ??39 million deferred purchase scheme debt as a financially prudent measure which will save the Council more than ??15 million over the next 10 years; notes the failure of Conservative honourable Members to condemn the Tory Council between 1990 and 1994 when it closed old people's homes, severely cut the education budget and wasted money trying to sell the Council's housing stock; further notes that the ??100 a head bribe given by the Tory Council to every council tax payer in 1994 lost Ealing Council ??10 million in income; and calls on honourable Members to condemn the 16 years of Tory Government meddling with local government finance as the prime cause of the Council's financial problems.

EALING COUNCIL FINANCES (1349A1)
The Early day motion has received an amendment sponsored by Harry Greenway (primary, Conservative) and tabled on Tuesday, 4 July 1995. It has been signed by 33 members in total.
leave out from `regrets' to end and add `that Ealing Council under Labour control left a deficit in reserves of ??12,000 plus loan debt of ??158 million, borrowed and wasted between 1986 and 1990; further regrets the dishonesty of the present Labour council in saying that it inherited a deficit of ??15 million in May 1994, using this fiction as a pretext to sack 300 people, to cut services, including old people's homes, to close the award winning Ealing Training and Development Centre for teenagers and to raise the council tax by 10 per cent in April 1995, despite the repayment of ??75 million of Labour debts by the Conservative Council of 1990 to 1994 and the bequeathing by that council to its successor Labour administration of ??43,682,000.'.
