MONOFILAMENT NETS IN SCOTLAND

That this House recognises that use of large-mesh monofilament nets poses no threat to Scottish salmon stocks; notes that these nets are already being used by non-Scottish boats in Scottish waters even though Scottish boats are banned from using them; believes that the current ban on Scottish boats is absurd, inequitable and has led to considerable hardship; and calls upon the Government to immediately revise the relevant 1986 Inshore Fishing Order to allow the carriage of appropriate large-mesh monofilament gill nets as demanded by the Mallaig and North-West Fisherman's Association and other fishermen's associations on the West Coast.
