Closure of Ravenscraig Hot Strip Mill

That this House deplores the decision by British Steel to close the hot strip mill at Ravenscraig with major job losses; recognises that the hot strip mill and a major new investment programme for Ravenscraig, Clydesdale and Dalzell is essential to ensure a viable future for the Scottish steel industry; calls upon British Steel to reverse its catastrophic decision; and urges all Scottish honourable Members to unite in opposing British Steel's decision and in demanding that British Steel maintains all its existing plant in Scotland and embarks upon a major new investment programme aimed at equipping Scotland's steel industry for the demands of the 21st century.

At end add 'and further calls on the Secretary of State for Scotland to clarify immediately the clear discrepancy between his own comments of 16th May, Official Report, column 887, and those of the Leader of the House who, during business questions on 17th May, stated that the Government would not seek 'to influence' the decision of British Steel plc'.
