Early day motion tabled by primary sponsor Robert Parry (Labour), on Wednesday, 8 March 1995, in the House of Commons. It is signed by 59 members in total.

UNITED PAPERWORKERS INTERNATIONAL UNION AND TATE & LYLE, PLC

That this House expresses its deep concern that A.E. Staley Manufacturing Co. in the United States, owned by Tate & Lyle plc, has locked out 762 unionized workers in Decature, Illinois, since 27th June 1993 in order to impose a substandard labour agreement; believes that the use of these tactics in order to permanently abolish hundreds of these workers' livelihoods while contracting out much of their work to non-union contractors is damaging to the image of British industry abroad; is dismayed that the management of A.E. Staley has so far failed to follow through with Sir Neil Shaw's public commitment at the annual general meeting in January that the company would negotiate 'night and day' to find a solution to the dispute; and calls upon Sir Neil to intervene actively in the dispute in order to end the lockout and to reach a negotiated settlement with the United Paperworkers International Union.
