NATIONAL MEMORIAL IN LIVERPOOL TO MERCHANT SEAMEN

That this House recognises the debt it owes to the Merchant Navy for its valour during World War Two; believes that a new national memorial situated on the Liverpool waterfront from where so many merchant vessels sailed, would be a fitting way to commemorate the loss of 30,000 merchant seamen's lives and to recall the injuries and fatalities which affected 25 per cent. of Merchant Navy personnel; and believes that the 50th anniversary of these hostilities should not pass without a suitable recollection of the contribution of the Merchant Navy.
