Early day motion tabled by primary sponsor Denis MacShane (Labour), on Monday, 24 June 1996, in the House of Commons. It is signed by 61 members in total.

JINGO JOURNALISM

That this House deplores the frenzy of jingoistic, notably anti-German, nonsense in the tabloid press; and contrasts the hooligan atmosphere of some political and much press comment in recent weeks with the sporting enthusiasm of football fans who set a much better example of English fair-play than many an editor.

Amendments

The Early day motion has received 2 amendments.

1041A1
leave out from `House' to end and add `believes that some of the extremes of sentiment expressed against Germany in national newspapers would be substantially reduced if Germany took a more positive attitude at European Union Council of Ministers meetings towards the United Kingdom's desire to complete the single market in financial services and the provision of second pillar pensions for the European Union's peoples.'.
1041A2
at end add 'and regrets to note that, as this jingoistic nonsense is reported, in suitably lurid terms, in the German tabloid press, some potential German tourists, fearing public displays of hostility or disorder towards their families or cars, are threatening to stay away from Britain this summer.'.
