ARMS TRADE AND SRI LANKA
That this House views with grave concern the sale of arms by Her Majesty's Government to the Sri Lankan Government; notes that such exports exacerbate the conflict betweeen the Sri Lankan state and the Tamil minority which has left hundreds of thousands of Tamils dispossessed and uprooted; calls upon Her Majesty's Government to join United Nations Secretary General Dr Bhoutros Bhoutros Ghali in his attempt to find an early negotiated political solution to the conflict; notes that international human rights organisations continue to accuse the Sri Lankan authorities of engaging in torture; and further calls upon Her Majesty's Government, in view of the escalation of arrests and detention of Tamils in Colombo, to impose a moratorium on all removal notices on Sri Lankan asylum seekers.
