United Kingdom and UNESCO

That this House congratulates UNESCO's Director-General Dr Federico Mayor for securing the acceptance by the organisation's General Conference of a reformed constructive policy, programme, management strategy and development plan which are more focussed, practical and appropriate than before and which are consistent with UNESCO's constitutional responsibilities; further congratulates him for acting successfully to address the problems of politicization, poor management, excessive budgetary growth, and the contentious issue of the freedom of the Press, information and communication; believes that these moves towards the creation of a more efficient organisation with an inventive and more clearly defined programme, with which the United Kingdom could feel more at home, should enable Her Majesty's Government to declare, at the earliest date possible, its intention to secure the United Kingdom's resumed membership of UNESCO.
