CONDUCT OF THE PRINCIPAL OF SWANSEA INSTITUTE OF HIGHER EDUCATION

That this House regrets that the excellent standing of the internal degree work at the Swansea Institute of Higher Education is in danger of being undermined by the college senior management's irresponsible conduct of the institute's overseas activities; is shocked that the principal and vice-principal misrepresent the scale of the official criticism of over-marking of overseas examination papers; is concerned that the staff and the academic board each have passed a vote of no confidence in the principal and vice-principal; regrets that the Board of Governors has not been effective in monitoring the manner in which the principal and senior staff have operated in overseas markets; deplores the college's failure to make clear to students and academic authorities at Hainan University that the institute has not been validated to offer University of Wales qualifications in China; deplores the convoluted web of misrepresentation spun by the principal; and asks the Secretary of State for Wales to consider what action can be taken to secure the immediate suspension of the principal and vice-principal, and the urgent restructuring of the board of governors.
