Early day motion tabled by primary sponsor Barry Sheerman (Labour and Co-operative Party), on Tuesday, 4 February 1997, in the House of Commons. It is signed by 92 members in total.
CHILD PROSTITUTION
That this House congratulates the Children's Society on its report 'The Game's Up - Redefining Child Prostitution', highlighting the growing problem of child prostitution in British cities; calls on Her Majesty's Government to provide clear leadership in a national co-ordinated campaign to tackle this growing area of child sexual abuse; further calls on chief constables and directors of social services to contribute to local and regional campaigns to address the problem; further calls for the offence of enticing a child into prostitution to be raised from its present two year maximum sentence to be at least equal to the seven year maximum penalty currently available for living off immoral earnings; but notes that in the past 11 years there have been only 16 successful prosecutions for enticement of a child into prostitution.
