Early day motion tabled by primary sponsor Lord Stratford (Labour), on Tuesday, 3 December 1996, in the House of Commons. It is signed by 51 members in total.
SWEDISH DESTRUCTION OF TORTOISES
That this House condemns the action of the Swedish customs and agricultural authorities for their callous and brutal treatment of 1,000 Horsfield's tortoises frozen to death on 24th October after being impounded at Arlanda airport in Stockholm; calls for an explanation from the Swedish authorities as to why offers from the Tortoise Trust and SAS airlines to transport the animals back to Tadzjikistan were totally ignored; demands to know if it is the policy of the Swedish authorities routinely to destroy all animals seized in similar circumstances; and calls for action to be taken against those responsible for this criminal destruction of 1,000 harmless creatures.
