Labour Party's Policy on Nuclear Disarmanent

That this House calls upon the Leader of the Opposition to reconsider his volte face on unilateral nuclear disarmament; calls his attention to the profound changes in Eastern Europe; reminds him of his legitimate criticism of the Prime Minister for continuing to target the great European cities in what was formerly the Eastern zone of Europe; demands from him a clear statement that Labour would not target with nuclear missiles these cities or any in the Soviet Union; urges him to recognise the validity of the decision of the Labour Party conference in Scotland which rejected his present policy; reminds him of the Labour Party conference decision last October which calls for substantial cuts in defence expenditure; advises him that in the light of the new situation in Europe it is madness to spend money on nuclear weapons when so much requires to be done in economic and social investment in the United Kingdom; and calls upon him to face up to the question posed by his honourable Friend the Member for Paisley North about whether or not he would press the nuclear button.
