Early day motion tabled by primary sponsor Denis MacShane (Labour), on Monday, 9 December 1996, in the House of Commons. It is signed by 24 members in total.

GOVERNMENT FINANCIAL SUPPORT FOR BEDFORDSHIRE

That this House notes with concern the enormous pressures placed upon the people of Bedfordshire resulting from the Government's Local Government Financial Settlement for 1997-98 and from the manner in which the Government is implementing the local government reorganisation in the county; further condemns the imposition through capping of expenditure cuts of ??15 million in new Bedfordshire's budget which will devastate services, coupled with oppressive increases in the council tax of 21 per cent. on the county council precept; and calls upon the Secretary of State for the Environment to reconsider the council's standard spending assessment, rate support grant and notional spending level.

The Early day motion has received an amendment sponsored by David Madel (primary, Conservative) and tabled on Monday, 16 December 1996. It has been signed by 2 members in total.
leave out from `House' to end and add `congratulates the Conservative Government and Conservative county councillors on making substantial improvements to Bedfordshire's education system since 1979, including new schools, a large expansion of four plus nursery units, replacement of school buildings and improving standards (confirmed by OFSTED reports in the county); and wonders for how long non-Conservative county councillors will continue to ignore the problem of surplus school places, which is the one aspect of education that is diverting resources from popular and successful schools.'.
