TERRITORIAL ARMY

That this House welcomes the current debate on the Territorial Army which underlines continuing support for this valuable resource; and looks forward to Government proposals which build on the strength and tradition of the TA in making it capable of fulfilling its modern role within the context of the United Kingdom's strategic defence needs.

leave out from 'resource' to end and add 'and deplores the fact that the Government are proposing to cut the numbers of the Territorial Army from 59,000 to 40,000 people and to close a number of territorial units; calls on the Government to explain how in this context the Territorial Army will be able to recruit from all areas of the United Kingdom and how they will be able to fulfil their existing role of providing support for the regular forces in performing their defence role of the United Kingdom; and calls on the Government to reconsider these far-reaching and ill-thought out proposals.'.

leave out from 'resource' to end and add 'but endorses the Defence Committee's report, The Strategic Defence Review (HC 138), particularly paragraph 427, which begins 'We consider the proposals for a reduction in the strength of the Territorial Army are misconceived'; and calls upon the Government to think again having taken fully into account the view of the Territrials themselves.'.
