Early day motion tabled by primary sponsor Mildred Gordon (Labour), on Tuesday, 5 November 1996, in the House of Commons. It is signed by 125 members in total.
DEPORTATION OF WIVES WHO LEAVE VIOLENT HUSBANDS
That this House deplores the fact that many immigrant wives whose immigration status depends upon their marriage are faced with detention and deportation if they leave their violent husbands in order to protect themselves and their children; and finds it unacceptable that Government policy is subjecting these women to further trauma and the additional punishment of deportation instead of treating the issue of protecting women and children from domestic violence with the seriousness it merits.
