FORMULA ONE AND TEENAGE SMOKING

That this House is concerned that smoking among 11 to 15 year olds rose by over 60 per cent. between 1988 and 1996; warmly welcomes the European Union Directive banning tobacco advertising, sponsorship and promotion; believes that cigarette advertising increases cigarette sales and is one important factor in the rise of teenage smoking and that sponsorship of Formula One by tobacco companies is a powerful form of cigarette advertising; and believes therefore that the Federation Internationale d'Automobile should recognise the role Formula One currently plays in teenage smoking and honour its promise to end tobacco sponsorship of Formula One by 2002.
