CHIROPRACTICE

That this House recognises the valuable and successful work carried out by chiropractors and osteopaths; and calls upon Her Majesty's Government to recognise their reputation through registration under the Professions Supplementary to Medicine Act 1960.

439A1: leave out from 'osteopaths;' to end and add 'welcomes the passing of the Osteopaths Act 1993 and the Chiropractors Act 1994 which provide for registration of practitioners; notes that in certain respects these Acts provide a greater degree of regulation of the professions and greater protection for the public than would be provided under the Professions Supplementary to Medicine Act; and calls for a review of all relevant legislation concerning alternative and complementary therapies with a view to harmonisation based upon the principle of maximum public protection.'.
439A2: leave out from 'osteopaths;' to end and add 'notes that these are now state-registered professions under the Chiropractors Act 1994 and the Osteopaths Act 1993; but also notes that, despite this, most people cannot obtain these valuable treatments as NHS patients; and believes that those who commission services should realise that these treatments are cost-effective, and that commissioning them would lead to savings for the NHS and would save many patients from unnecessary pain and disability.'.
