Early day motion tabled by primary sponsor Ann Clwyd (Labour), on Wednesday, 4 June 1997, in the House of Commons. It is signed by 32 members in total.
TURKISH INVASION
That this House totally condems the incursion into northern Iraq by the Turkish army; notes the tragic loss of life and destruction of property together with the displacement of Iraqi civilians; further notes that the Turkish Kurds who were refugees in the Atrush camp have now been forced to seek the protection of the Baghdad regime; is concerned at the destabilising effect of Turkish forces in the region; believes that the repeated incursions into northern Iraq by the Turkish army go far beyond any legitimate security interest of the Turkish state; and calls upon the Turkish government to withdraw its forces with immediate effect and respect the international borders between the two states.
