Early day motion tabled by primary sponsor Brian Sedgemore (Labour), on Tuesday, 13 March 2001, in the House of Commons. It is signed by 10 members in total.

INTEGRITY OF LOCAL GOVERNMENT

That this House calls on the Tory and Liberal Democrat parties to uphold the integrity of local government by following the example of the Labour Party in suspending councillors when they are charged with serious criminal offences; regrets that this was not done in the cases of Tory Councillor Isaac Leibowitz and Liberal Democrat Councillor Zev Lieberman in Hackney; and believes that the leaders of the Tory and Liberal Democrat parties should explain why they were prepared to allow their councillors to continue acting in the name of their parties when they were charged with forgery and conspiracy acting in the name of their parties when they were charged with forgery and conspiracy to defraud, offences which went to the heart of the democratic system.
