PUBLIC INQUIRY INTO MEAT FARMING

That this House welcomes the intense efforts of all concerned to end the foot and mouth epidemic as soon as possible; notes however that following this and the BSE epidemic there is very widespread concern about practices in farming, transporting and slaughtering animals for meat; and urges that once the epidemic is over, a public inquiry be established with a wide remit to examine health, welfare and economic issues to try to ensure the long-term future of the industry on a sounder basis.
