Early day motion tabled by primary sponsor Adrian Bailey (Labour and Co-operative Party), on Monday, 28 October 2002, in the House of Commons. It is signed by 33 members in total.

PRIVATE ACTION, PUBLIC BENEFIT

That this House welcomes the recommendations listed in The Cabinet Office's strategy unit report 'Private Action, Public Benefit - A Review of Charities and the Wider Not-for-Profit Sector'; notes that among the recommendations the Report calls for the modernisation of laws governing co-operatives and community benefit societies and recommends that community benefit societies should also have the option, following a vote of members, to be able to choose to protect their assets in perpetuity for a public purpose and prohibit conversion into a company, thus enabling them to provide public services at a community level; and urges the Government to introduce legislation in the next Queen's Speech to push forward reform of charities and the wider not-for-profit sector.
