Early day motion tabled by primary sponsor Mike Hancock (Liberal Democrat), on Monday, 8 July 2002, in the House of Commons. It is signed by 26 members in total.
STATUS OF ANIMALS IN THE 21ST CENTURY
That this House believes that all animals should be treated as sentient beings and is concerned that unacceptable practices where animals are treated as objects still continue today; further believes that all animals, at whatever stage of evolution, deserve protection and recognition; welcomes New Zealand's decision to introduce a Bill to grant apes certain basic rights; and calls upon Her Majesty's Government to improve the welfare and status of all animals in the United Kingdom.
