Early day motion tabled by primary sponsor Lord Stratford (Labour), on Monday, 28 January 2002, in the House of Commons. It is signed by 23 members in total.
MARJAN THE LION
That this House expresses its great sadness at the death of Marjan the Kabul Zoo lion; believes that the poor, mutilated creature came to symbolise the suffering over many years of both people and animals in Afghanistan; calls upon the new Government in Afghanistan to honour the memory of Marjan by banning cock-fighting and dog-fighting which have made an unwelcome re-appearance following the overthrow of the Taliban; and repeats its request to Her Majesty's Government to do all it can to relieve the suffering of other animals in that country.
