Early day motion tabled by primary sponsor Vera Baird (Labour), on Tuesday, 3 June 2003, in the House of Commons. It is signed by 243 members in total.

POLITICAL PRISONERS IN BURMA

That this House condemns the crackdown on the democracy movement by Burma's brutal military dictatorship; calls for the immediate release of Aung San Suu Kyi, leader of National League for Democracy, and for the release of all political prisoners in Burma; supports calls by Aung San Suu Kyi for targeted investment sanctions that will help cut the economic lifeline of the regime without causing hardship to most ordinary Burmese people; and calls on the British Government to push for investment sanctions with its EU partners, and if agreement cannot be reached at an EU level, then to implement investment sanctions unilaterally.
