HEALTH CARE FOR THE HOMELESS

That this House welcomes the Big Issue's Lethal Streets campaign on the effects on health of the homeless; is appalled at research which found the life expectancy of a rough sleeper to be just 42 years, is concerned that rough sleepers and people living in temporary accommodation find it difficult to register with a GP or to receive appropriate and humane care on leaving hospital and that homeless people are more likely to suffer from a range of conditions, including TB, infectious diseases and mental health problems; therefore calls upon the Government to issue guidelines to primary care workers in relation to access for homeless people to health services and to increase support to GPs in areas which are affected by homelessness as part of a new strategy to help homeless people; and urges the Government to treat the health of the homeless as a priority this Christmas.
