Early day motion tabled by primary sponsor Paul Marsden (Liberal Democrat), on Tuesday, 17 December 2002, in the House of Commons. It is signed by 22 members in total.
SHREWSBURY POST OFFICES
That this House expresses grave concern that six post offices out of a total of 18 in Shrewsbury are due to close; agrees with Postwatch that 'it will be the more vulnerable members of society including the elderly, disabled and unemployed' who will be affected the most; remembers Labour's pledge in 1997 that only they could be 'trusted with the future of the Post Office' and they would 'maintain the network of post offices', yet notes that 3,000 post offices nationally are due to close over the next two years; and urges the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry to reject Consignia's closure plan and invest in the Post Office to ensure a comprehensive network is maintained.
