ENDING FUEL POVERTY

That this House notes the submission of the Fuel Poverty Advisory Group to the Energy Policy Review and in particular the Group's view that resources for fuel poverty programmes will need to be increased by at least 50 per cent. if Government objectives to end fuel poverty are to be met; further notes that the recent report of the Trade and Industry Committee expressed the view that the 'only real long term solution to fuel poverty is greater energy efficiency of the housing stock'; and that although this would mean a 'short-term increase in expenditure, in the long term this is the only response that can help the environment save money and alleviate the considerable suffering experienced by fuel poor households'; and calls on the Treasury to provide adequate funding for a national programme of domestic energy efficiency improvement to ensure that objectives to end fuel poverty are met.
