Early day motion tabled by primary sponsor Ron Brown (Labour), on Thursday, 16 May 1991, in the House of Commons. It is signed by 33 members in total.
OPPOSITION TO THE CLOSURE OF THE CALEDONIA MILLS,LEITH
That this House opposes the closure of Rank Hovis's Caledonia Mills, Leith; recognises that many jobs will be lost to the local community, as well as affecting suppliers and sub-contractors; notes that management say the main reason for their decision is an alleged surplus of flour; yet realises that many people in Britain are under-nourished and millions starve throughout the world because they are denied basic foods; and calls on the next Labour government to bring United Kingdom food monopolies into public ownership under the democratic control of employees and consumers.
