Early day motion tabled by primary sponsor John Pugh (Liberal Democrat), on Tuesday, 25 October 2005, in the House of Commons. It is signed by 16 members in total.

GOVERNMENT PLANS FOR STATE INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS

That this House challenges the Government to produce evidence from Ofsted or elsewhere that under performance in schools is directly attributable to a lack of independence from local education authorities; notes that the success of state schools unattached to local education authorities is often coincident with the receipt of significant additional funds; deplores the departure from evidence-led policy shown by the drive to disconnect schools from local education authorities; and believes that only those in thrall to media clich??s and social Darwinism and devoid of a sense of irony would make the promotion of such an obvious oxymoron as state independent schools a priority.
