Early day motion tabled by primary sponsor Keith Vaz (Labour), on Wednesday, 30 November 2005, in the House of Commons. It is signed by 20 members in total.
SIR TERRY LEAHY'S VISIT TO INDIA
That this House notes the important contribution that Tesco has made to the development of popular retailing in the UK in the last decade; further notes however that there is a line to be drawn between innovation and dominance, between competition and monopoly; further notes the visit of Sir Terry Leahy to Bangalore in a bid to launch Tesco into the Indian market; admires his enterprise in seeking to sell Basmati rice to the Indian population, the retail equivalent of selling sand to Saudi Arabia; and calls on the British High Commission to recognise that Tesco is not the only British retailer seeking to expand abroad and hopes that he will be equally supportive to others.
