HOUSE OF LORDS REPORT ON RESEARCH FUNDING CUTS

That this House notes with concern the findings of the House of Lords Select Committee on Science and Technology that the very seed core of British science is at risk; further deplores the hasty financial cuts inflicted on research councils, including the ??28 million cut forced on the Science and Engineering Research Council, which will result in the closure of the Daresbury Laboratory in Warrington; calls on the Government to reverse the disastrous trend in the funding of British scientific research and to make funds available to Daresbury, which is regarded as a centre of excellence by leading scientists throughout the world; and further calls on the Government to ensure that proper resources are given to the funding of vital scientific research being carried out in the United Kingdom.
