Early day motion tabled by primary sponsor Alan Amos (Conservative), on Monday, 28 January 1991, in the House of Commons. It is signed by 1 members in total.

JAPANESE SUPPORT IN THE GULF

That this House notes the typically selfish and cowardly approach by the Japanese Government to supporting the Allied war effort in the Gulf; notes that Japan depends on the Middle East for over 70 per cent of its oil (compared to only 22 per cent for the U.S.A.); also notes that the estimated cost of the Gulf war is $500 million a day and that Japan has only contributed $1,900 million; further notes that Japan has not even sent any humanitarian aid workers; expects, however that Japanese businessmen will be the first in to seize business opportunities in the Gulf area immediately the Allies have won the war and military action is over; and urges Her Majesty's Government to tell the Japanese Government to pay its fair share forthwith, estimated at 20 per cent. of the cost of the Gulf war.

JAPANESE SUPPORT IN THE GULF (358A1)
The Early day motion has received an amendment sponsored by Teddy Taylor (primary, Conservative) and tabled on Tuesday, 29 January 1991. It has been signed by 2 members in total.
leave out from 'House' to end and add 'applauds the substantial contribution of $13,000 million which the Japanese Government has offered to the Gulf war; considers that this generous contribution is in line with the responsible and constructive policies of democratic Japan, and offers its sympathy and understanding to Japanese businessmen whose taxes will help to finance the contribution when they seek business and trade in European nations which apply blatant protectionism through the abuse of alleged anti-dumping policies, alleged voluntary restraint agreements and utterly shameful breaches of international sanctions policies.'.
