ROLE OF PLASTICS IN DIABETES

That this House is deeply concernedby the recent literature reviewed by Professor Miquel Porta of Spain and Professor Duk-Hee Lee of South Korea showing links between chemicals in plastics, including the now banned PCBs, the plastic-softenersphthalates and the plastic-hardener Bisphenol A and diabetes and obesity; notes that they are common substances in food packaging and plastic bottles; further noteswith alarm that both diabetes and obesity are becoming increasingly common, with diabetes set to rise to 10 per cent of the population by 2032; and calls on the Governmentto conduct further research to establish the dangers posed to the nation's health.
