USE BY HRH THE PRINCE OF WALES OF INTESTATE CASH

That this House is appalled that HRH The Prince of Wales has used money from people who died intestate in Cornwall to fund his own charities and to support bursaries at his old public school in Scotland; understands that because of a historical quirk Prince Charles, the Duke of Cornwall, becomes the owner of assets of anyone who dies in that county without a will or family; notes that last year this provided him with more than £450,000 and that additionally he is sitting on £3.3 million in cash from this source dating back many years; further notes that among the grants disbursed by him was £5,000 to Gordonstoun where he went to school, and to Business in the Community, the Soil Association and the Dorchester Arts Festival in Dorset; and demands that the Government brings forward legislative proposals to correct this outrageous anomaly and that such intestate funds are channelled into the public purse as they are in the rest of England.
