PAY FOR CLEANERS AT THE MINISTRY OF JUSTICE

That this House notes with great concern that cleaners employed at the Ministry of Justice in Whitehall by the contractor OCS Group receive the minimum wage of £7.50 per hour, and also suffer from inferior terms and conditions than those of their in-house counterparts regarding occupational leave and sick pay; further notes that the cleaners only receive Statutory Sick Pay, which provides £35.74 for the first week when an employee is off sick and £89.35 per week from there on, meaning that the cleaners are often forced to work when they are ill because of the fear of being evicted; notes that the cleaners are not afforded the dignity of separate rooms for men and women to change in; notes that the minimum wage of £7.50 is not a living wage, and that workers in London who receive below the London living wage of £10.20 per hour by definition are living in poverty; supports the cleaners' calls, made through their union United Voices of the World, for the London Living wage, contractual sick pay, equal annual leave entitlements to their in-house colleagues and separate changing rooms for men and women; calls on the Ministry of Justice to backdate the London Living Wage to 1 November 2017 and to confirm it will remain a Living Wage employer on 1 November 2018; and further calls on OCS to recognise and negotiate with the cleaners' trade union.
