Early day motion tabled by primary sponsor David Clelland (Labour), on Monday, 18 October 1993, in the House of Commons. It is signed by 64 members in total.
CERVICAL SMEAR TESTS IN GATESHEAD
That this House expresses depp concern at the news that 744 women in Gateshead have been given smear tests using unsatisfactory and unreliable methods; believes that the priority must be to ensure that the patients affected are re-tested immediately and the results given in the shortest time practicably possible; welcomes the establishment of a helpline and calls for a full counselling service to be made available; but expresses profound disquiet at the delay in dealing with this matter from the time the Gateshead Health Authority first became aware of it; and calls for an inquiry into how this delay occurred, with the findings of the inquiry being made publicly available.
