POLITICAL DISCRIMINATION IN GERMANY

That this House notes with deep concern that Berufsverbote in the former German Democratic Republic has led to the arbitrary sacking of 40,000 teachers out of a total of 170,000 which has in turn resulted in class sizes rising from 22 to over 30; welcomes the recent visit to the House of Commons by Margitta Hollich, Head Teacher of a comprehensive school in Leipzig, dismissed in 1992 for being 'close to the system', but who successfully appealed to the Leipzig Labour Court, and who now faces a vindictive appeal to the Saxony Labour Court; recognises that this political vendetta bodes ill for the democratic well-being of Germany; and wishes Margitta Hollich well in her courageous struggle for justice.

leave out from 'House' to end and add 'recognises that many people in former Eastern Germany were educated in the misbelief that socialism offered answers to people's problems: notes that many such people need to be given the opportunity to understand the real world of free markets and democracy; and believes that all individuals who were genuinely reluctant followers of the previous corrupt socialist regime should be treated with understanding and given an opportunity to correct their mistakes, whilst those who were willing and active followers of the corrupt socialism followed in East Germany should be investigated by the authorities for possible abuse of human rights.'.
