75th anniversary of the first nuclear test explosion

That this House honours the courageous servicemen and women, scientists and civilians who have been affected by atomic testing programs since the first nuclear explosion took place 75 years ago on 16 July 1945; understands that over the last 75 years there has been in excess of 2,000 nuclear tests across the world; recognises that nuclear testing has drastically changed the global geopolitical landscape; remembers the sacrifices of the 22,000 UK servicemen who took part in testing programmes, many of whom died at a young age, leaving families and descendants with congenital defects; commends the work of LABRATS, an international organisation which supports and represents people who have been affected by the tests; and calls on the UK Government to officially recognise the sacrifice of UK servicemen by awarding medals and compensation.
