Early day motion tabled by primary sponsor Lord Wallace of Tankerness (Liberal Democrat), on Wednesday, 17 March 1993, in the House of Commons. It is signed by 83 members in total.
SHETLAND PETITION ON SHIPPING SAFETY
That this house notes with approval that a petition subscribed by almost 6,000 Shetlanders, and presented to the Minister for Aviation and Shipping on 17th March, calls for a range of measures relating to shipping safety, including tanker routing measures to protect vulnerable coasts, proper monitoring of tanker movements around British shores, the implementation of a global strategy for the safe management of tankers and their crews and a full and open inquiry into the grounding of the 'Braer' on Shetland on 5th January; profoundly regrets the Government's rejection of calls for a formal investigation under the merchant shipping legislation; and, believing that justice must not only be done but must be seen to be done, calls on the Secretary of State for Transport to have proper regard for the publicly expressed will of so many Shetlanders and to reverse his decision not to establish a formal investigation by a sheriff into the grounding of the 'Braer'.
