Early day motion tabled by primary sponsor Baroness Primarolo (Labour), on Wednesday, 10 February 1993, in the House of Commons. It is signed by 148 members in total.

PRESCRIPTIONS: LIMITED LIST

That this House condemns Government plans to add a further 10 categories of medicines to the limited list, thereby preventing them from being prescribed under the NHS; is appalled that the categories include contraceptive pills and drugs to combat skin disorders; notes the removal of these drugs is adding to a two-tier health service providing a wider range of drugs for those who can afford to pay; and believes that the removal of some contraceptive pills will lead to a lack of choice for women.

Amendments

The Early day motion has received 2 amendments.

1374A2
leave out from 'House' to end and add 'is concerned that making 1.5 million women change their prescription from the oral contraceptive pill in favour of a cheaper product will produce unpleasant and worrying side effects for them and unforeseen risks including unplanned pregnancies and an increase in abortion.'.
1374A1
leave out from 'House' to end and add 'urges Her Majesty's Government to review its policy to limit further the availability of medicines to NHS patients in view of the fact that patients must continue to receive the most effective available treatments irrespective of age, sex, income or cost of treatment;that the great uncertainty caused by the policy is undermining investment in current and future pharmaceutical research; and that the two joint working groups from the Department of Health and the Association of British Pharmaceutical Industry, set up by the Secretary of State for Health, should have an opportunity to report to her before the new regulations are laid before Parliament for debate.'.
