MR SALMAN RUSHDIE

That this House condemns the statement of the Iranian Government which marked the fourth anniversary of the fatwa against Mr Salman Rushdie by reiterating its death threats; welcomes the views of Her Majesty's Government as set out in the recent speech by the Right honourable Member for Grantham to the Commission on Human Rights in Geneva; and calls on the Prime Minister to follow the example of the Irish President, Mary Robinson, and meet Mr Rushdie, so sending a clear message to the Iranian Government that the fatwa against a British citizen is nothing more than a terrorist threat which is abhorrent, offensive and contrary to international law.
