110th anniversary of the 36th (Ulster) Division at the Somme
That this House commemorates the 110th anniversary of the service and sacrifice of the 36th (Ulster) Division on 1 July 1916 during the opening day of the Battle of the Somme; notes that the Division advanced with exceptional courage against entrenched German positions, achieving its objectives at immense human cost; further notes that by its relief on 2 July it had suffered approximately 5,500 casualties, including around 2,069 fatalities; recognises the profound and lasting impact of this loss on communities across Ulster; and pays tribute to the enduring legacy of the 36th (Ulster) Division and the sacrifice of all British forces who served and fell in the Great War.
