Anniversary of the July 5 2009 Urumqi violence and the current situation of Uyghur People

That this House remembers with dismay the events of 5 July 2009 in Urumqi, Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, in which hundreds were killed and widespread unrest occurred; further notes reports from human rights organisations concerning subsequent detentions and treatment of Uyghur people by the Chinese state; expresses concern at ongoing allegations of restrictions on cultural, religious and civil freedoms affecting Uyghurs and other Turkic Muslim minorities; recognises the importance of transparency, accountability and respect for international human rights standards; calls on the Government to continue raising these matters in bilateral and multilateral engagement; and urges the Chinese Communist Party to uphold human rights, the rule of law and the protection of minority communities.
