International panel on inequality and the UK's 2027 G20 presidency

That this House notes the findings of the G20 Extraordinary Committee of Independent Experts on Global Inequality, chaired by Professor Joseph Stiglitz, that between 2000 and 2024 the richest 1% captured 41% of all new global wealth while the poorest half of humanity received just 1%; recognises that extreme inequality threatens economic growth, trust in democratic institutions and global security; welcomes the proposal for an International Panel on Inequality, modelled on the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, to build a shared scientific consensus on the drivers, consequences and solutions to inequality; further notes that the proposal is championed by the Governments of South Africa, Brazil, Norway and Spain, is supported by the UN Secretary-General, Germany and Japan, and was presented at a high-level event during the UN General Assembly on 23 September 2026; further welcomes the Foreign Secretary's stated intention to put inequality on the agenda of the UK's 2027 G20 presidency; and calls on the Government to seek G20 endorsement for an International Panel on Inequality during the UK's presidency, and to offer the UK's leading academic institutions as partners in its work.
