FAT BOYS DINER, BIRMINGHAM

That this House notes the comments of the Secretary of State for Employment on 17th November, Official Report, column 176, that 'I do not condone bad employment practices wherever they occur"; invites the Right honourable Lady to investigate pay and working conditions at the Fat Boys Diner, Birmingham, where the rate of pay for people engaged as waiters and waitresses commences at ??5 per 6-hour shift, out of which a deduction is made towards the cost of uniform, where staff are regularly dismissed summarily, where newly engaged staff are expected to work at least one full shift without pay on the grounds that they are training and where staff are instructed to solicit gratuities using the slogan 'don't be a nickel squeezer, leave a tip'; and considers that such practices are all too common in the fast food industry since the Government removed young people from the scope of wages councils in 1986.
