Early day motion tabled by primary sponsor Dennis Skinner (Labour), on Thursday, 24 September 1992, in the House of Commons. It is signed by 104 members in total.
DEVALUATION AND PIT CLOSURES
That this House condemns the current pit closure programme and the recent Ministerial report that 30 more pits are to be closed at a time when the trade deficit is one billion pounds per month; notes that the recent devaluation of the pound means that coal produced by British miners, already the cheapest deep-mined coal in Europe, will be at least 10 per cent. cheaper compared to imported coal; and demands that the new coal contracts be withdrawn, the privatisation plans abandoned, imported coal reduced to a minimum and the pit closure programme brought to an end with the saving of 30,000 mining jobs in coalfield communities.
