BOUNTY ON MR SALMAN RUSHDIE

That this House condemns the increase in bounty money being offered by the 15 Khordad Foundation for an act of terrorism against Mr Salman Rushdie; calls on Her Majesty's Government to make immediate representations to the Iranian Government through the Charge d'Affaires in London in order to protest against this threat to a British citizen and his rights to speak and to travel freely, and to insist that the Iranian Government publicly condemns the statements of the 15 Khordad Foundation and instructs it to revoke the bounty money; further calls on Her Majesty's Government to ensure that this affront to the human rights of a European citizen is placed on the agenda of the EC's conference in Edinburgh; and that the Prime Minister, as President of the EC, does all that he can together with the United Kingdom's EC partners to end the fatwa and protect Mr Rushdie's civil rights.
