Early day motion tabled by primary sponsor Lord Campbell-Savours (Labour), on Thursday, 16 July 1992, in the House of Commons. It is signed by 22 members in total.
TREATED SEWAGE FLOWS INTO BASSENTHWAITE LAKE (No.2)
That this House notes that on the question of treated sewage flowing into Bassenthwaite Lake, National Rivers Authority officers have done invaluable work in monitoring these developments, including the monitoring of 12 major contributory flows carrying treated sewage effluent deposits into the lake; demands that more intensive work be carried out as a matter of urgency; notes that the National Rivers Authority and the North West Water Authority are commissioning the Institute of Fresh Water Ecology to carry out a nutrient balance analysis on the lake; believes that if the treated sewage streams are found to be over-contaminated with excessive amounts of nutrients, North West Water, a private company, with others, will be obliged to strip out the nutrients; believes that before the Department of the Environment and English Nature consider penalising anglers and other lake users by designating the lake a National Nature Reserve, decisions will have to be taken to restore the ecological balance in the lake; and believes that major deterioration has happened over the last three years with the destruction of fish stock numbers and reports of damaged fish.
